Preface
I want to start out by saying that my intention when writing Kendra was to add representation for BIPOC readers. As a white woman, I can pretty much pick up any romance book and know that when I open those pages, I’ll be able to imagine myself as the female main character. I won’t ever have to overlook the male character waxing poetic about the FMCs creamy, porcelain skin or her pink goddamn nipples. I don’t even have to think about it—how convenient it is to be the “standard”. This is part of my white privilege that I was born into and whole-heartedly acknowledge.
I’m not going to pretend like I’m some white author on the crusade against racism with this book, though some may see it that way, because let’s be honest, nobody is more performative when it comes to anti-racism work than white women—we run that shit. This book will have imperfections. After all, Kendra is a Black woman written by a white woman. There is no amount of research I can do, or sensitivity readers I can involve, that will ever allow me to understand what that is like.
By publishing this book, I’m opening myself up for a lot of criticism, but for the sake of adding a little melanin to the romance world, which we desperately need, I'm going for it. I am not an expert on what is or isn’t racist because I’ve never been on the receiving end. Therefore, I had two amazing Black sensitivity readers comb through this manuscript to ensure accuracy and remove any harmful language. I readily took every suggestion and made changes.
Still, there will be readers who take issue with how this story is told. Some will argue Kendra’s not Black enough, yet others will say writing about a white man falling in love with a WOC is fetishizing Black women in general. That was never my intention. I’m a smut author, and this is a smut book.
